Dairy Servings


I have a couple of questions about getting in my TWO daily servings of dairy/milk.


First how much is considered a serving? For milk I just assumed one cup. Is that right?


And, what are some other foods that you guys use to count for dairy AND how much?


Sometime I have a fudge bar, does that count? Pudding, creamy soups??


Thanks. This is something I'm having trouble with everyday.

OOOH...good questions! I lent my booklet to someone so I don't have it to look up. Your booklet will tell you how much 1 serving is, in the section with the foods listed.

You can count yogurt, cheese, cottage cheese as dairy. It will be listed in the dairy section of your week one booklet. There are certain restrictions on what is considered a milk serving when eating yogurt. You have to make sure that it's a certain percentage of...and here's where I get confused without my booklet...either calcium or protein. You might want to ask your leader. If it's under a certain percentage of one of those then it's not considered a milk serving.

Maybe Chelle can jump in here and help me out.

Also, if you have 2 cups of fat free milk at the same time, it only counts as 3.5 points, instead of 4. I'm not sure why they did this, but they must have some reason...and hey...it frees up 1/2 a point!

I don't believe the pudding pop counts (could be wrong)...the pudding will if you make it with skim milk. Creamy soups should count, if you make them with milk...but I'm not sure. Might want to check that out. I usually only use creamy soups when making casseroles. Maybe Chelle can answer that one too.

Hope this helps. I looked on the website, but they didn't have an explanation of the program guidelines. I think they are afraid people will print them out and then no one would join the meetings.

First of all....let me say.....  Hope you enjoy the board!  We sure do!!!!


In order for something to be counted as a milk it must be 20% calcium.  So most ice creams do not count!  BUMMER!!!!  Just check your nutritional value.


Another way I sometimes get mine in is my 0 pt hot chocolate.  And Pria bars!!!  They have I think 30% calcium.  They are 2 pts and are a change.  I check a lot of the bars.  I believe the Honey Bunches of Oats bars (which are 3 pts) have enough, too.


I must admit, this is one spot I have trouble with.  Now that I am eating cereal for breakfast, I'm getting 1/2 cup of milk in (which is 1/2 a serving and 1 pt for ff milk).  I just hate using 4 of my pts for milk, esp since (hopefully!!!) I will be dropping pts soon!  That's where I really lean on my 0 pt hot chocolate!

HIYA Chelle!! Thanks SO MUCH for the BIG welcome!! I love it here already!


I, too, HATE to give up points for my milk servings!! lol. BAD, I know. I'll keep in mind the tips you gusy gave me.


When I mentioned pudding and creamy soups, these are not homeade, LOL! I eat the SF choc. pudding cups (w/ one LF gram cracker crumbled up, spoon out the pudding, and top with lite cool whip, ONLY 3 points, great dessert...anyway!) and the creamy soups are Progresso mostly.


Sooo, if it has 20% calcium, I can count it? None of my books are clear on this....they do not specify how much is a serving in the 8 good health guidelines..........OK mid-post I stopped and grabbed my Getting Started book.....


Milk products: fat-free cheese, fat-free cottage cheese, fat-free milk, AND YAY, FF SF pudding!! (one cup is considering one milk serving...woohoo!), fat-free sour cream, fat-free plain yogurt. The others don't specify how much is considered a serving except the pudding, milk and yogurt. If it's a cup of yogurt, it's ONE serving!


NOW OILS...this was another question.......ff salad dressing, ff margarine, ff mayo, nonstick cooking or baking spray. NO certain amount given. Also, 2 tsps of olive, canola, safflower, sunflower, or flaxweed oil.  FYI, LOL.


SHEW...this post got out of hand! BUT I got some much needed info!! =)

Kassidy...the salad dressings don't count as your oil if you use the premade kind. If you mix your own homemade, individual serving of salad dressing then you may count the oil in it. They do this because there is no way of telling exactly how much oil you get per serving of the premade dressing.

I don't believe that ff margerine or cooking spray counts...because they have other things in them too..but check with your leader on this.

Ok. All of that info came out of my Getting Started book. It didn't say store-bought or homemade ff dressing.

Ok guys!!!!  You are finding all my weak spots!!!!  I am horrid about my oils!!!!


One tip I do use, is when I eat my Subway sandwiches (which we eat a lot of!) is I sometimes get the oil and vinegar on it.  It is olive oil so that's a good oil. 


And just for extra info...our Subways are running a deal right now....2 6-inch sandwiches, 2 bags of chips, and 2 drinks for $7.99!!!!  We get diet Cokes or unsweetened tea and the light chips (1 pts for the Light Lays and 2 pts for the Light Doritos).

I really like Subway, too. But I always want the tuna, which is loaded w/ mayo, BAD BAD!!


And about the oils and dairies I listed, I was looking at the list for the Core Plan, NOT the good healthy guidelines. Soooo, I think the only oils are the actual oils listed. SORRY if I caused some confusion. NOW, I still don't know how to get my oil in!!
