A new study by researchers from the U.S. National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute found that nearly one in four women over the age of 19 skip breakfast. Yikes! That's bad news for two reasons: Not only is breakfast an important source of calcium and fiber, it's also the meal that can most help women avoid excess weight gain! Experts say the reasons women miss breakfast include an attempt to cut calories, a hectic morning rush, or the assumption that it has to be complicated to cook. In reality, breakfast is what kicks your metabolism "on" each morning, so it's one meal you don't want to miss!
Not sure how to fit breakfast in? Keep it simple and healthy with yogurt, fresh fruit, and granola, or have a slice of whole-wheat toast topped with low-fat cheese and a few tomato slices. You can even whip up a smoothie to sip during your commute. It's easy! But remember that not all breakfast foods are created equal when it comes to your health. Avoid high-calorie foods like greasy meats, fried potatoes, fast-food breakfast sandwiches, and the like. Go for the healthier breakfast options instead — and don't skip it!
