E. coli outbreak traced to bagged spinach in 8 states
WASHINGTON – An outbreak of E. coli in eight states has left at least one person dead and 50 others sick, federal health officials said Thursday in warning consumers nationwide not to eat bagged fresh spinach.
The death occurred in Wisconsin, where 20 others were also sickened, said Dr. David Acheson of the Food and Drug Administration's Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition. The outbreak has sickened others – eight of them seriously – in Connecticut, Idaho, Indiana, Michigan, New Mexico, Oregon and Utah.
FDA officials do not know the source of the outbreak other than it appears to be linked to bagged spinach. “We're advising people not to eat it,” Acheson said.
I heard about this, too. We had some Spinach in the fridge and threw it out this morning...even though we aren't one of the states just in case. I'm glad I bought just plain salad this time instead of spinach!
Thanks for posting this Cassi!!!!!!

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Federal health officials worked Friday to find the source of a multistate E. coli outbreak and warned consumers that even washing the suspect spinach won't kill the sometimes deadly bacteria.
One person died and dozens of others were sickened in the 10-state outbreak, linked by Food and Drug Administration officials to bagged spinach.
At our store this weekend, we tossed out all our bagged and unbagged spinach as a precaution. They just said on the my little news ticker that there is one confirmed E.Colli case in my county tied to the spinach.
Thanks for posting this Cassi. I had half a bag left, and eventhough I didn't get sick from it, I threw the rest out.
I've read that eventhough the bagged salad and spinach says it's ready to use...that you should always wash it well anyway. I usually soak mine in a solution of vinegar and cold water for 5 minutes and then spin it dry. The acid in the vinegar is supposed to kill any "bugs".
E-coli can take a couple of weeks to make you sick after exposure...so be careful everyone. Wash everything well and cook meat thouroughly and we should be ok.
Safety first...always! Coe
